Collection: Phallus impudicus

We sell the stinkhorn mushroom (Phallus impudicus) in three forms: ground powder, capsules and tincture. All of it is harvested in Ukraine, not imported from China.

The strangest mushroom in the forest

A young Phallus impudicus doesn't look like a mushroom at all. It's a white "egg" about the size of a hen's egg, half buried in the soil, with a jelly-like mass under the skin. In this stage it's often called a witch's egg, and that's when it gets picked.

Then the Phallus impudicus does something almost no other mushroom can. The egg splits open, and within a few hours a white, spongy stalk up to 25 centimetres tall pushes out. It grows so fast you can watch it happen.

At the top, an olive-green, slimy cap forms, with a sharp, unpleasant smell like rotting meat. The smell draws in flies, and they carry the spores through the forest.

Where we harvest Phallus impudicus?

The Phallus impudicus grows in deciduous and mixed forests from June to October, usually in humus-rich soil. We pick it in Ukraine at the egg stage, while it's still firm and has no smell, then dry and grind it. We make the tincture from fresh stinkhorn and food-grade alcohol.

What the research says

Eastern European folk medicine has used the Phallus impudicus for a long time, mostly as a tincture. Scientists are studying its polysaccharides, but almost all of this research has been done on cells in a test tube or on animals. There are no human studies, so nothing can be said about any effect of the stinkhorn on the body.

The Phallus impudicus is not a substitute for treatment prescribed by a doctor. If you have a serious illness, don't give up treatment in favour of folk remedies. We sell the Phallus impudicus as a food product, not as a medicine.

Warnings

The tincture contains alcohol. It must not be given to children, people with alcohol dependence or liver disease, and you shouldn't drive after taking it. If you take medication that doesn't mix with alcohol, choose the powder or capsules.

We don't recommend the Phallus impudicus during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for children, or for anyone with a mushroom intolerance.

You can buy Phallus impudicus powder, capsules or Phallus impudicus tincture at Muhomornya, with delivery across Ukraine and abroad.
